My Career1967: Began teaching at the University of Western Ontario, London
1971: Became a member of the Department of English at Glendon College, York University, Toronto 1967: Published my first collection of poetry titled ‘The Dainty Monsters.’ 1976: Published the novel ‘Coming Through Slaughter’, the work that began me on my road to fame. 1982: Published Running in the Family 1984: Published my collection of poetry titled ‘Secular Love’ 1989: Published the poem ‘The Cinnamon Peeler’ 1998: Published the poem ‘Handwriting: Poems’ 2000: Published my novel titled ‘Anil’s Ghost’ 2007: Published ‘Divisadero’ 2011: Published ‘The Cat’s Table’ |
My Family History and Personal Story1928: My father went to Cambridge
1930: My grandparents discovered that my father has not been studying and went to England to confront him. 1930: My father met Doris, my mother 1931: My father proposed to Kaye Roseleap 1931 : My father called off engagement to Doris then reinstated May 1932: My parents were married 1933: My father begins to drink heavily 1933: My grandmother’s dairy farm closed 1938: My grandfather, Philip Ondaatje, died 1942: My grandmother, Lalla, began to run a boarding house during the war September 12th, 1943: I was born 1948: My father returned to Rock Hill to run a chicken farm Aug 15th 1947:Lalla died 1950: My father married again 1952: My parents divorced 1954: Moved to England with my mother 1960: Became a poetry editor for the independent small press company, Toronto Coach House Books 1962: Ventured to Canada on my own to further my education 1962: Met my wife, Kim Jones 1964: Married my beautiful wife 1965: Had my first child with Kim 1967: Had my second child with Kim My Education

1954: Moved to England with my mother 1954-1962: Completed my primary education at Dulwich College in London 1962: Ventured to Quebec to receive a college degree 1962-1964: Studied at Bishop’s University at Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada 1965: Obtained my Bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto 1967: Received my M.A. from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario |
